ve the sea! The Heron is a breeding bird round the coasts,and where the cliffs are high, the beautiful Osprey mayperhaps be seen. This is the sub-zone in whichwading birds—such as the Kentish, Common andLesser-ringed Plover, the Turnstone, Common Sand-piper and Whimbrel, and many birds of passagebelonging to the Order Charadriiformes, must be sought,frequenting, as may be guessed, the parts of the shorewhere the coast is low and open. The foreshore vegetation is varied and cosmopolitanin character, representative of such genera as Mesem-bryanthemum and Frankenia. Euphorbias are repre-sented by E. Peplis and E. Paralias, Argyranthemumfrutescens—the Paris daisy—and one or two speciesof Beta, besides Polycarpcea Teneriffcz and Forskohleaangustifolia, representing the endemic flora. Sub-division 2 is that of the desert, and this typeof country is mainly to be found on the south andsouth-east coasts, whole stretches of country beingthere given up to barren desolation.
