outside and white within. This kind is quitehardy, and forms a bush from 3 ft. to 4 ft. high. M. gracilis,or Kobus, a less hardy kind than some of the others, differsfrom purpurea in having paler green and narrower leaves, andin the flowers being longer and more slender in form, the pointsof the petals, which are dark purple on the outside, are slightlyturned inwards. M. Lennei, originated some years ago in Italy,is said to be a natural hybrid between Yulan and gracilis, andhas, as will be seen by our plate, the more highly-colouredflowers of obovata, but it is difficult to distinguish among themany varieties now cultivated in different gardens. M. Camp-belliisanew introduction from the Himalayan Mountains, withmagnificent foliage and red flowers. Its hardiness has not yetbeen sufficiently tested, but it is expected that it will live out-of-doors, at least, in the south of England. G. GoEDoy. Text Appearing After Image:
MAGNOLIA LENTJEI i June 10. 187€.) THE GARDEN. 649 LIQUID MANURE IN GARDENS.One of the common mistakes made by amateur cultivators of flowersis that of over-manuring. To grow plants properly, little or no crudemanure should be incorporated in the soil, as it induces a too Uixuri.ant growth of foliage and wood at the expense of the flowers. Theliquid form is the best in which to apply manure, and this should bemade very weak, especially if it be of a stimulating character, suchas guano. The chief value of liquid manure is that its effects areperfectly controllable, and can be made constant, either to producean exuberant growth and sustain it, or to produce any lesser effect,as may be desired. If wood and foliage be desired, the manureshould be given as soon as the buds begin to swell in the spring, orwhen the leaves commence to develop. This growth can be kept npduring the season by frequent applications of the liquid, but shonldnever be continued beyond the first of August, as then
