heads on green bases. Boldsweeps of well-kept lawns are here and thereinterrupted by groups of flowering shrubs invery flourishing condition. Pernettya mucronata,the larger growing Heaths, Erica lusitanica andE. mediterranea; Hydrangea paniculata grandi-flora, and many otheT plants are represented.American plants thrive remarkably well, not-withstanding the unpromising clay soil. It is A dingle at the extremity of the Douglas woodawaits Mr. Jacksons attention; a secludedstream is by and by to be converted into asmall torrent, and Bamboos and Ferns are toadd to its attractiveness. The vineries, fortunately, have sufficient head-room to allow the canes ample length—about 30feet. In adjoining houses Bellegarde and RoyalGeorge Peaches are doing well, and frames andplant-houses are fully occupied with successionalbatches of useful flowering plants and bulbs.There were considerable quantities of Car-nations (Duchess of Westminster particularlygood), Calanthe Veitchii, Zonal Pelargoniums,

Many fine old green Yews may be noted, par-ticularly one whose branches sweep the lawnwith a circumference of 50 yards. Within anavenue of fine Limes is a 7 fe t wide Rhododen-dron walk. Many of the best varieties areplanted singly on either side. The walkextends for a great distance, and terminatesin the woodland. Fountains and figures sur-rounded by beds, furnished in summer withtuberous Begonias, serve to break the even flat-ness of the long, front terrace. The usual summerbedding plants occupy the north-west front inthe summer season. Herbaceous borders, wellfilled with the best varieties, overhang a service pleasant to recall the displays of Rhododendrons,Azaleas, Ledums, Skimmias, Andromedas, Erica6,and Pernettyas. Throughout the gardens theformal and the natural are happily blended ; froma 6et of even lawn beds the eye is carried to achain-and-pillar arrangement of Clematis andRoses, then to
