I dont watch his eye inidleness, but because I am morbidly attracted to it, in a dreaddesire to know what he will do next, and wheth^- it will bemy turn to suffer, or somebody elses. A lane of small boysbeyond me, with the same interest in his eye, watch it too. Ithink he knows it, though he pretends he dont. He makesdreadful mouths as he rules the ciphering book ; and now hethrows his eye sideways down our lane, and we all droop overour books and tremble. A moment afterwards we are againeying him.
