Summary[edit]

Description
English: Women in Mumbai constitute almost half of the workforce and yet most have no access to public toilets. When they do need to use a toilet they have to either find a quiet dark corner or stand in line with men at the public toilets. Neither situation is particularly appealing though.

"I am lucky, my house is close by so I can quickly go and come back, but others have nowhere to go" Says a vegetable vendor.

While the men of the city have access to around 1500 plus toilets, there are only 150 toilets for women. Further, men can use the public facilities for free but women have to shell out Rs.2 each time they use the toilet. That might seem like a small amount but for many it adds up and eats into their already modest income.

In 2012 a group NGOs came together in Mumbai and started the 'Right to Pee' campaign asking the BMC for free toilets for women which have facilities like female attendants and sanitary napkin disposers. While the BMC has agreed to this demand, it remains to be seen what concrete steps will be taken.
