| Description |
English: The Sluices The local name for the field that once contained the original village of Arlington. The bumps in the ground clearly give an idea to the layout of the medieval village which lay to the west of the church between that and the Cuckmere river. Why it moved is not known though there is a suggestion that settlement gravitated to a number of local farms then gradually coalesced again around the crossroads to the east of the church. Alternatively, the nearness of the Cuckmere which regularly bursts its banks during a prolonged wet period could also be a reason. Taken from the Weald Way. |
