Society wasestablished in the island of St. Thomas, Danish WestIndies, on the 19th day of March in the year 1856, by themechanic class of men known as caulkers and shipcarpenters. Its objects were to better the generalcondition of humanity and to prevent poverty amongits own membership. The societys buildings, as theystand at present, were built and have been kept upby the frugal earnings of its members. There is afemale branch that is subordinate to the Brotherhoodbut which has its own laws and working orders. Thissociety is the oldest in the islands, and has worked agreat amount of good during its lengthy and somewhatvaried history. Clubs are established in the three towns of the twolarger islands and they comprise in their membershipthe representative peoples of the leading classes. Allthree are provided with billiard tables and good read-ing-rooms, which keep on file a splendid selection ofbooks and the most important of the American, English,and European newspapers and magazines.
