Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe amphitheatre at Trimontium - geograph.org.uk - 588572.jpg |
English: The amphitheatre at Trimontium The hollow in this field is the first Roman military amphitheatre to be recognised in Scotland and was attached to the Roman fort and camp complex at Trimontium. Suggested by Dr Bill Lonie, an amateur archaeologist, it was surveyed in 1993 and excavated and confirmed by Bradford University in 1996. The amphitheatre was oval-shaped with a central area of 37m by 30m and was fenced off from a simple bank of river-stone terracing. Drygrange Viaduct is in the background. (Source: Trimontium Trust information board on site).
The Trimontium Trust organise a Trimontium Walk from Melrose To Newstead on Thursdays in April to October, and Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August. For a modest cost a local guide will explain all the Roman history in this beautiful area. For more information on the Trimontium Trust see http://www.trimontium.org.uk/wb/ |
