THE BEAVER, This Rodent is found in three Continents,' but more numerously in North America than elsewhere. Beavers are famous as the most skillful architects amongst the mammals below Man, not only because of their well constructed "lodges," but especially because they build with great engineering skill, strong dams in order to secure for themselves a sufficient depth of water in all seasons. These they construct of logs, tree branches, mud and stones, and the picture shows a party of Beavers engaged in a work of this character. (Castorfiber.) (325)
