ong Byzantines in the Eastand German Goths in the West, the ascetic idealhas been followed, which passed from melancholygrace to grimaces of feature and unsightly emacia-tion or convulsion of body. Mr. Holman Huntsgreat skill and experience, and a peculiar happi-ness, in this instance, in the selection of hismodel, have enabled him to produce a face of su-preme beauty and power, and a form alike asceticand athletic ; where brilliancy of skin and low con-dition of flesh produce all necessary effect of delicacyon the long, grandly-formed and sinewy limbs ofthe Fairest of all men. To an archasologist theappearance of this picture is an era : what it isto the painter only a skilled painter can tell.Whatever it is or may become to the Christianspectator, this work is the thought and object towhich five years labour has been dedicated bythe first painter of sacred subject which this gene-ration has produced. 1 See the chapter on tlie Catacombs, and the Index article onPortraits of the Lord.
