and extraordinary preservation, as well as for its justproportions and tactful distribution of details. It is almost asperfect as when the cast left the hands of the chaser. Theknobs, of a chaste and severe form that occurs on earlyexamples as on the Malton Farm piece PL xli, 2, have anadditional feature, which becomes developed later on, of a sortof extra growth out of the head of them. The head platewith the three divisions is no longer strictly rectangular butits outline expands towards the sides. It has a pattern ofdiamonds stamped on the edges of the centre division. Thewings below the bow show the animals head, and all this regionis sharply faceted and finished in a most workmanlike style. The forehead of the horse has the median groove and thelower part of the muzzle is treated in the later convention. The flatness which Schetelig notices as distinguishing Englishfrom Scandinavian examples is very apparent, and we have XLIV facing p. 268 CRUCIFORM FIBULA FROM LONDESBOROUGH, YORKS
