The bridge on the Baro River is the greatest achievement of the Mengistu Haile Mariam's Communist regime in Gambella. Maybe in the whole country. Who remembers Mengistu? Mengistu was the ruler of the great famines of the 1980's. The famous one of the Ethiopian kids with round eyes and round bellies. While highlanders were starving, Mengistu decided to develop the Gambella region. Why developing the Gambella region? Even if Mengistu never said were he was coming from, some say he was from Gambella. His mother would have been a slave who had a kid with the ruler of Gambella region, the successor of the ruler empowered by the father of Haile Selassie after the conquest of 1898. Was Mengistu a bastard? However, the Baro Bridge remains the longest bridge of Ethiopia and for a long time, the only one in the country. Here people have a good memory of Mengistu, and Mengistu liked them: "it's the only place in the country where he could walk free, without risk to be killed"
