ael and Marshall, who obtained typicaldevelopment of the ovaries, with ovulation and formation of corpora lutea,in animals (young rabbits and adult rats) from which the uterus had beencompletely removed. Bouin and Ancel have described an epithelium-likeformation in the muscular coat of the uterus of the rabbit and guinea-pigduring the latter half of pregnancy which they consider to be related tothe development of the mammary glands during the final period of gestationand the production of milk. To this formation they have given the nameof glande myometricale endocrine. Mackenzie found that extracts fromthe involuting uterus of the cat shortly after parturition cause a free flowof milk from the incised nipple of lactating animals (fig. 103). He obtainedno such results with extracts made from the non-pregnant uterus, or fromthe pregnant uterus at other times. He infers, therefore, that the uteruscontains a galactagogue hormone only at this period. Internal Secretion of Mammary Gland 149

Adler found subcutaneous injection of extract of mammary gland to produceenlargement of the suprarenals and increase of adrenalin in the blood, some-times sufficient to cause glycosuria. He also found it to arrest the development ofthe embryo, and even to produce abortion in pregnant animals. These observationsrequire confirmation. INTERNAL SECRETION OF PLACENTA Halban has suggested that the placenta furnishes the stimulus for thedevelopment and growth of the mammary glands, whi
