English: The grave of Richard Cabell, Buckfastleigh. This unusual structure houses the tomb of Richard Cabell in the graveyard of Holy Trinity Church at Buckfastleigh. Richard Cabell died in 1677, and was a local landowner about whom there are many unpleasant local legends. It is believed that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle loosely based on Richard Cabell the character of Hugo Baskerville in the Sherlock Holmes story The Hound of the Baskervilles. 1097516 and 1097523 . The Cabell family's mausoleum (known locally as "The Sepulchre"), in the graveyard of Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh, contains the tombs of various members of the Cabell family. It is a grade II* listed building with pyramidal slate roof and three windowless walls, with the fourth closed by an iron railing providing a view of the chest tomb within. The names inscribed on the tomb within are Richard I Cabell (d.1612) and his wife Susanna Peter (d.1597) and Richard II Cabell (d.1655) their son,^[1] father of Richard III Cabell (d.1677). Sir Howard Colvin identified it as one of the first two freestanding mausoleums in England, the other being the Ailesbury Mausoleum in Maulden, Bedfordshire, built by Thomas Bruce, 1st Earl of Elgin (1599-1663) of Houghton House, Maulden, in memory of his second wife Diana Cecil.^[2] Several legends exist concerning the ghost of Richard III Cabell connected with the structure.
