But there is now a piospect of the establishment of such regulations aswill harmonize the necessities of commerce with a stionger quarantine againstthe importation of pestilence. As an illustration of the effect of the lack oftransportation facilities, the following statistics will be interesting, showingthe value of certain articles of Western production exported to South Conti-nental ports in 1883, from the whole United States and from New Orleans: From U. The intelligent and combined efforts, now being directed toward im-proving this condition of things, give promise of a better state of affairs inthe future.

The preparations for the grand Worlds Industrial Exposition long-since gave to the business of New Orleans an extra impetus, the effectof which has not yet subsided.
