After leaving Kaiserswerth, she stayedfor a time on her way home with the Sisters of St.Vincent de Paul in Paris. She was without religiousbigotry in the pursuit of knowledge, and sincerelyadmired the devoted and unselfish work of thisRoman Catholic sisterhood. They were indeed sistersof mercy, and the hospitals and schools of theircommunity had obtained world-wide renown. Theirinstitutions had the advantage over Kaiserswerth,at that period, of being in long-established workingorder. A PERIOD OF WAITING 8i The skill of the Paris surgeons stood remarkablyhigh, and she could scarcely have had a betterground for observation than the French capital.With her good friends the sisters, too, MissNightingale visited the homes of the poor andmade a minute inspection of their methods oforganised charity. While pursuing this interesting work. MissNightingale was taken ill. She had now a personalexperience of the skill and tender care of the sisters,who nursed her back to convalesence. As soon as she was able to travel, she returned toher family and completed her restoration to healthin the beautiful surroundings of her well-lovedhomes of Embley Park and Lea Hurst. There shespent the ensuing months in her old work of quietbenevolence amongst the poor and infirm in theparishes, where her name was even then a house-hold word.
