as is clearly shownin the bulletin, but it is important that box packing, as far as it goes, should be pro-perly done. There is much more to be learnt about the methods and the art of pack-ing a box of fruit than most people imagine before they have tried it. It is hoped thatthis bulletin will meet to some extent at least the need as well as the demand forinformation along this line, and that it will be helpful to many who are endeavouringto reach good results in this direction. The improvement in box packing in Eastern Canada during the past two yearshas been a notable feature of the fruit trade, and I am pleased to say that much ofthis improvement is attributed to the demonstration work carried on by the FruitDivision, with the assistance of expert packers employed for that purpose. I have the honour to recommend that this bulletin be printed for general distri-bution. I have the honour to be, sir. Your obedient servant, J. A. RUDDICK, Dairy and Cold Storage Conwnissioner. 3296—2

THE PACKING OF APPLES IN BARRELS AND BOXES.By A. McNeill. INTKODUCTION. It is the object of this bulletin to describe the chief features-of barrel and boxpacking. The principles involved are few and easily mastered. The art of doing thework is a more difficult matter. Practice alone will secure proficiency in this. It isbelieved that a careful study of the cuts made from photographs of packed boxes andthe diagrams illustrating the details of these will be of great assistance to thebeginner. BARRELS. In Eastern Canada, the greater portions of the fruit will be shipped in barrelsfor many years to come. The culls and lower grades should be shipped only to theevaporator, the canning or vinegar factory. A large proportion of the remainder canbe sent to market with advantage, in barrels. Only a small proportion of the fruitwill pay in boxes. This must be a Eancy grade or a No. 1, strictly graded to sizeand colour. Barrels, therefore, still maintain, and are likely to maintain, their pre-emipackingofapplesi19mcne
