Indeed, in the well-fought battle of 1884, which placed prohi-bition in the state constitution, Mrs. Stevens won for herself a fame asorganizer and agitator hardly second to Neal Dow himself. She visitedevery county and nearty all the large towns, holding meetings constantlyand throwing the whole force of her strong personality into the battlewhich resulted in such signal victory. Some of the triumphs of the Maine Womans Christian TemperanceUnion under her leadership have been, the school suffrage law, the raisingof the age of protection to sixteen years, a strong scientific temperanceinstruction law, which is well enforced, and the constitutional amendmentto which we have already referred. In addition to her distinctive temperance work, Mrs. Stevens is wellknown in the other reform and philanthropic enterprises of the state. She
