THE HARPERS WEEKLY ARTIST SKETCHING THE GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD. 18G3 Photo-engraving was unknown in the days of 1801 to 1S0.>, and it remained for the next generation to make possible the reproductionin book form of the many valuable photographs taken by Matthew B. Brady and Alexander Gardner in the North, and George S.Cook, J. D. Edwards, A. D. Lytle, and others in the South. The public had to be content with wood-cuts, after sketches and drawingsmade by the correspondents in the held. On this page appears A. R.Waud, an active staff artist, in war and peace, for Harpers Weekly.
