by their brilliant coloration.One of the best known is tlie red-headed trogon(H. erythiocephalus), characterised by the chestnutbreast, the deep crimson head, neck, and under-parts,and the black wings, in wliich the primaries are edgedwith white, while the wing-coverts and inner second-aries are finely vermiculated with white; the gapeand region of the eye being bare and of a jiurplishblue colour, while the bill is bluish with a black tip,the feet pinkish, and the eye dull red. The female isnot quite so bright in colour as the male, the lower-parts being duller; the back as well as the neck andbreast reddish brown, and the vermiculations on thewing-coverts buff instead of white. The habits of this trogon difier from those of itsAmerican allies, for Mr. Oates saj-s that its food consists entirely of insects, on whichit swoops after the manner of a flycatcher. It afiects thick forests, and, althoughsolitary in its habits, is so conunon in some of the liill forests tliat a dozen or more
