Summary[edit]

Description

Paying my respects at the 9/11 Memorial, which was dedicated in September 2011 on the tenth anniversary of the tragic events.

I have no personal ties to any of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed that day. But Flight 175 and Two World Trade Center do bring it home for me. Two World Trade Center (South Tower) had a great outdoor observation deck on the roof, which offered the best views of New York City I ever remember, and I used to be a regular on the very aircraft that was operating United 175 on that fateful day.

I am looking up into the sky, into the void that used to be occupied by Two World Trade Center (South Tower). About 700 feet or so above me, at 9:03 AM on 11 September 2001, United 175 crashed into the building, leading to its collapse about 55 minutes later, and taking hundreds of additional lives with it. It is not right that any of this should have happened at all.

This is the one spot that brought me to tears.

At the top of this photograph, to the east of Ground Zero, is the new Two World Trade Center under construction. The new World Trade Center is configured differently from the old; there are no twin towers, and Two World Trade Center will not stand quite as tall as the old Twin Towers, or the new One World Trade Center.
