Notes
  • Significance: Rugby, an English colony in Tennessee founded in 1880, was the idealistic conception of the influential and popular English education, Thomas Hughes. The public library, named for him, which opened in 1882, was a central building in the community. It was designed by Cornelius Onderdonk, who came from England with the first group of settlers. Not only is the building well preserved, but it still contains the original furnishings and the entire collection of over 7000 volumes, all published before 1899.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-45
  • Survey number: HABS TN-200
