Ganden Monastery is set in this bowl at the top of a very long and steep hill. Over the ridge hugging the last buildings is a similarly steep drop off to the valley below. They sure know how to pick therir spots here!
This is the start of the excellent Ganden to Samye trek (see my photos, map and descriptions in this set). When we were there, Ganden Monastery was reachable by public bus on our Tibet tourist permit without being on a tour making it cheap and easy to get to this remarkable spot.
