| Description |
English: Tilbury Fort, Essex, 22 October 2019. The original fort was built by Henry VIII in the 1540's as the Hermitage Bulwark, later the West Tilbury Blockhouse, as a defence against a French Fleet sailing up the Thames, in 1588 it was reinforced by Elizabeth I against the Spanish Armada and was greatly enlarged in 1670 by Charles II against the Dutch fleet. In 1905 several quick firing 12pdr guns were fitted against attacks by German torpedo boats, in WWI it was fitted with anti-Zeppelin AA guns and in WWI was used as an AA operations centre. In 1588 Elizabeth I gave her famous speech here to galvanize the troops against the forthcoming Armada. Pictured are the walls and Water Gate. |
