I am on a subway train in Toronto. The Community Resources Connections of Toronto is providing mental health guides in a number of immigrant languages in addition to English. Toronto is a lot like New York - the nation's largest city, and a magnet for immigrants. And since Canada is much more proactive about recruiting immigrants than the US, and often recruits aggressively from former British colonies, many South Asians and Hong Kong Chinese end up in Toronto. In fact, Canada relies heavily on the wealth of the more affluent immigrants to bolster its economy, create new jobs, and hopefully lessen its dependence on the US economy. Additionally, English and French are both official languages on the federal level in Canada. And while individual provinces can choose to go English-only (western provinces) or French-only (Québec), Ontario is bilingual at the provincial level as well. While Ontario has historically spoken English and that remains the case for the vast majority of the population, a French speaker should not have too much trouble accessing governmental services in Ontario. |
