Two Havasupai Indian women in front of a native dwelling, Havasu Canyon, ca.1899
Photograph of an two Havasupai Indian women, Rock Jones' daughter (a basket maker) and her friend, in front of a native dwelling, Havasu Canyon, ca.1899. Jone's daughter sits on the ground with an incomplete basket in her lap. The other woman stands at right with a "Kathak" or large conical basket slung on her back. Between the two sit another kathak and a jug on the ground. The dome-shaped dwelling is formed of a lattice of sticks covered with thatching. Another dwelling is visible at right behind them. Vertical canyon walls loom in the background.
