English: U.S. Navy Command Master Chief Rafael Perez attends a 9/11 remembrance ceremony aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21) Sept. 11, 2012, in the Gulf of Aden. The event marked the anniversary of the terrorist hijackings of four commercial airliners on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The hijackers deliberately crashed two of the planes into the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York and one into the Pentagon. The fourth aircraft crashed near Shanksville, Pa. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. New Yorks bow section was constructed with 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the WTC. |
