Description
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Nicholas (DD-449) suffered a hang-fire in No. 53 5"/38cal gun mount on 13 May 1943, while firing on enemy positions on Kolombangara. The gun exploded, with no casualties. This photo shows Nicholas shortly after that event before she was repaired at Nouméa by replacing the gun with one from USS Hutchins (DD-476), newly arrived in the area.
