Gustavo Mejia, from the Peruvian frigate BAP Villavicencio (FM 52), listens as U.S. Navy Quartermaster 2nd Class Aurora Chavez explains the position of the guided missile cruiser USS Thomas S. Gates (CG 51) while underway as part of PANAMAX 2005. Lt.j.g. Mejia is aboard Thomas S. Gates for the duration of the exercise to learn more about the U.S. Navy. PANAMAX is a multinational training exercise in defense of the Panama Canal involving 15 countries. This year's exercise involves 15 countries, including naval forces from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama, Peru and the U.S., along with observers from Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, Mexico and Uruguay.
