Kommentarer: Efter att ha tillbringat juni 1883 i Grez utanför Paris och ett par dagar i Kalmar inställde sig Nils Kreuger den 2 juli vid det betydelsefulla Konstnärsmötet i Köpenhamn. Härifrån fortsatte han sedan i sällskap med Richard Bergh till det lilla fiskeläget Katwijk aan Zee vid Nordsjön, ungefär en mil utanför Leiden.

Det här är troligtvis en förstudie till ”Herde med får" (olja på duk 47 x 66 cm, signerad N. Kreuger och daterad Katwijk aan Zee 1883). Det senare verket har beskrivits i en biografi av Kjell Boström 1948, där han också tillägger att ”för Kreuger var Holland nu inte bara Rembrandts land; han kände stark själsgemenskap med de 'låga ländernas' trygga folk”. - Uppgifter hämtade från Bukowskis Markets katalogisering.
