Summary[edit]

Description
English: Vivian's Steps These steps lead from yr Offis Fawr (The General Office) to Gilfach Ddu Yard. On Oct 31 1885, the manager, Walter Warwick Vivian (d. 1943), locked out the quarry's 3000 workers. The only way they could have their jobs back was to come singly to the office and sign a new and restrictive contract. Instead, hundreds marched on the office, told Sgt Rowlands of the Quarry police to go and tell his boss that he had 10 minutes to leave or else. Eight minutes later, with Vivian waving a revolver, thee sergeant and himself made their way down these steps to Gilfach Ddu and made good their escape by train to Felinheli. The lock-out lasted until March 1st 1886. 290038
