  • Significance: This house is an outstanding example of Gothic Revival architecture as interpreted in California in the 1860s. It was built in 1866 for Commodore James Thomas Watkins, captain of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. The Cartans, who acquired the house in 1945, are responsible for the extensive landscaping. / The Watkins-Cartan House is an outstanding example of Gothic Revival architecture as interpreted in California in the 1860's. It is the only remaining house of San Francisco country squires who were first to establish homes on the peninsula while commuting via the newly built railroad. This house is typical of their various dignified and comfortable homes, representing a balance between distinctive affluence of the owners and their Yankee practicability. It was built for Commodore James Thomas Watkins, captain of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
