ve withbands, guns, and fireworks. Here we took thesteamer down the Danube to Linz, the river wind-ing in a most picturesque manner. After stoppingthe night at Linz we went to Salzburg, arriving on Maria fest day. Every one, in gala costume, wasexchanging greetings, and only the peasants in theirprettily quaint costumes appeared to be devout. We then turned northward and stayed at Pragueand Dresden en route for Berlin. At the first-namedcity we witnessed the funeral of a general of the army, and were profoundly impressed by the perform-ance of the Dead March in Saul by combined bandswith muffled drums. Nothing could have been moresolemn or grand. On arrival at our hotel in BerlinI received a telegram from the Crown Princess ofGermany requesting me to call at the Palace thenext afternoon. I had previously communicatedto Her Royal Highness, in accordance with herrequest, my intention of visiting Berlin. I wasmost kindly received by both the Prince and POTSDAM (1874)(Size 10 x 6£ inches.)

AT GREAT MISSENDEN 139 Princess, who invited me to visit them at the NeuesPalais at Potsdam on the following morning. Iarrived at 11 a.m., and drove out with the Princeand Princess, accompanied by Count Seckendorf,on a sketching expedition, and afterwards returnedto the Palace, where I had the honour of diningwith them. The Princess showed me some of herpaintings and sketches in oil, which were excellent. On the next morning, in accordance with theirdesire, I called to make my adieus. They bothshook me cordially by the hand, and I must confessI felt proud of having grasped the hand of a manwho had wielded the sword at Sedan. Afterwards my wife and I proceeded on ourreturn journey to England, stopping at Magdeburgand Halberstadt, at the suggestion of the CrownPrincess, to make some more sketches in thesequaint old towns. At Christmas in the next year, 1875, the CrownPrincess sent me the first part of a chromolitho-graphic work on Potsdam, with views of the NeuesPalais and the Sans Souci
