Gulf of Sidra or Sirt?[edit]

The gulf can be called either, but we need to pick one or the other as we have multiple edits with each using a different name. Looks like Gulf of Sirte was used during WWII, and Gulf of Sidra being used most often today, like with the Gulf of Sidra incidents. Looks like Sidra is more mainstream to me. Oops... Gulf of Sidra is more common in English. I was thinking about خليج سرت (Gulf of Sirt) which is how it's called in Libya.-- Rafy (talk) 21:51, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Scale[edit]

Surely it would be a nice idea to add the scale here (both miles and kilometers). 200.221.128.129 23:49, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Transliteration[edit]

This is a nice map, thanks for creating it. Since it is obviously meant to accompany, File:Libyan Uprising.svg, it would be a good idea to use the same convention for the transliteration of city names (e.g. Sirte > Sirt, Ben Jawad > Bin Jawad, etc.). --Dbachmann (talk) 10:21, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Show more detail?[edit]

Port map symbol. See also Category:Geolocalisation symbols, Category:Map icons, Category:Unicode MiscSymb SVG.

The larger scale would allow us to display some strategic detail not included in the overview map. Including, perhaps, roads (mainly the coastal road), and the important refineries at Ras Lanuf and Mersa Brega. Control of these two ports is of very high strategical importance, both for the ability to export oil and to refine crude oil for fuel. Especially the w:Ras Lanuf Refinery alone accounts for more than half of Libya's total output of petroleum products. It may also be worth noting that the district boundary between Sirt and Al Wahat shown in the map is also the historical boundary between Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. --Dbachmann (talk) 10:44, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

actually, File:Gulf of Sirt Front.svg already does most of what I was asking for here. --Dbachmann (talk) 13:35, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nawfaliya contested, needs a blue ring Libya fighters surge towards Gaddafi hometown: The main fighting now is taking place about 35km from here, in the town of Nawfaliya --Tingo Chu (talk) 16:14, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And for people not aware (Libyan names can be spelled in many different ways), Nawfaliya = Al Nofaliya on the wiki map. 62.107.208.50 18:57, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think a basic understanding of Arabic transliteration is a prerequisite for doing anything with these maps ;) ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 19:05, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
