English: Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili in Georgian or in Russian patronymic nomenclature Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili; 18 December 1878 – 5 March 1953) was the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee from late 1922 until his death in 1953 on march 5. In the years following Lenin's death in 1924, he rose to become the leader of the Soviet Union, which he ruled as a dictator.

January 1940 Beria's letter to Stalin asking permission to execute 346 "enemies of the CPSU and the Soviet power" who led "counter-revolutionary, right-trotskyite, plotting and spying activities". Number 12 on the list is Isaac Babel. Stalin's vote: "за" (affirmative). The Politburo's resolution is signed by secretary Stalin.
