תיאור

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CVA-10) and a Fletcher-class destroyer being refueled by an oiler in 1953. Yorktown, with assigned Carrier Air Group 2 (CVG-2) was deploymened to the Western Pacific from 3 August 1953 to 3 march 1954. The carrier is accompanied in this picture by three Fletcher-class destroyers and an Allen M. Sumner or Gearing-class destroyer (left), and an unidentifyable destroyer (far right). A cruiser is trailing the formation.

The picture is dated 1 January 1953, although the carrier was still being modernized, then. After the Second World War, the Yorktown had been mothballed for almost five years. In June of 1952, she was ordered reactivated, and work began on her at Puget Sound, Washington (USA). On 15 December 1952, she was placed in commission, but her SCB-27A conversion continued into 1953 and she conducted post-conversion trials late in January. On 20 February 1953, Yorktown was placed in full commission and conducted normal operations along the U.S. West Coast through most of the summer of 1953. On 3 August, she departed San Francisco (California) on her way to the Far East. She arrived in Pearl Harbor (Oahu, Hawaii) and remained there until the 27th at which time she continued her voyage west. On 5 September, the carrier arrived in Yokosuka (Japan). She put to sea again on the 11th to join TF 77 in the Sea of Japan. The Korean War armistice had been signed two months earlier; and, therefore, the carrier conducted training operations rather than combat missions. She served with TF 77 until 18 February 1954 at which time she stood out of Yokosuka on her way home. She made a stop at Pearl Harbor along the way and then moored at Alameda once more on 3 March.
