A sketch of Jane Austen by her sister Cassandra (c.1810)
Posthumous engraving of Austen published in the 1869-70 Memoir
Rather stiff 1873 re-engraving of the Memoir portrait
A relatively good reengraving of the Memoir portrait (ca. 1900)
Remastered detail from sketch of Jane Austen by her sister Cassandra
Note: All the older published "portraits" of Austen were based on an engraving in the 1870 Edward Austen-Leigh Memoir of Jane Austen, which in turn was based on a somewhat rudimentary life sketch of Jane Austen by her sister Cassandra (a sketch which was not considered too successful by some of those who had known Jane Austen), as reinterpreted and Victorianized in 1869 by Mr. Andrews of Maidenhead, Kent, and then the engraver (see Jane Austen: A Family Record, p. 253). The 1870 engraving which was the result of this process was further redone and reinterpreted in subsequent publications, with varying results. The accuracy of such "portraits" is thus somewhat doubtful.
