Leo III the Isaurian (c. 685 - June 18, 741) was Byzantine emperor from 717 until his death in 741. He replaced emperor Theodosios III on the throne, and was succeeded by his son, Constantine V. Leo III was one of the most important Byzantine emperors: he began the Empire's recovery against the Arab Caliphate, and initiated the policy of Iconoclasm against religious imagery.
