Originally the upper walls were decorated with a series of 28 Portraits of famous men. The portraits are in the Louvre and in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino

The upper register (first row in the table for each wall) presents classical and humanistic writers, as opposed to the religious figures (broadly speaking) of the lower register (second row in the table for each wall).[2]
