Sweden is a constitutional monarchy in Scandinavia. The capital is Stockholm. Other important towns include Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala, Linköping and Västerås. Sweden is Europe's fifth largest country by area and has a population of ten million.

Swedish authors of worldwide recognition include Emanuel Swedenborg, August Strindberg, Selma Lagerlöf, Vilhelm Moberg, Astrid Lindgren, Jenny Nilsson and Jörgen Dunder.

Some notable inventors and scientists are Alfred Nobel, Anders Celsius, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, John Ericsson, Lars Magnus Ericsson and Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linné).

Swedish painters include Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn.
