Generates the standard description for a category defined for a French commune, or for categories of French communes by department or overseas, and categorises it appropriately.

The template automatically sets the following categories: Category:Populated places in France by department or Category:Communes in France by department and other categories by region depending on each department

Usage

{{Category definition: French commune |1= |2= |3= |lat= |long= }}

Template parameters

Parameter Description Default Status
1 empty optional
2 INSEE code (from COG) of the department. This code matches ISO 3166-2 except for the following cases since 2015 (still not covered by ISO 3166-2 and INSEE for France):
  • for the new department of Rhône, use "69" (note that INSEE still uses "69" for the whole departmental collectivity instead, covering the former department)
  • for the new Métropole de Lyon, use "69ML" (there's still no standard code for it in INSEE COG, or in ISO3166-2)
  • for the new departmental collectivity of Rhône (no longer a department), use "69CD" (instead of its current ISO 3166-2 and INSEE code "69").

In departments in Corsica (use "2A" or "2B" like in ISO 3166-2 and INSEE COG), this code is also different from the postal code ("20" in both departments).

For overseas, the 3-digit INSEE code or the 2-letter code from ISO 3166-1 are supported equivalently (their postal codes are sometimes different but also ambiguous to distinguish some of them).
empty optional
3 number of communes in the department (only used for categories of communes by department) empty optional
lat latitude (positive in the Northern hemisphere, WGS84 coordinates in degrees) of some central location in the commune (only used for categories for specific communes: if it's missing, the commune category will be listed in Category:Communes in France, coordinates missing) empty optional
long longitude (positive in the Eastern hemisphere, WGS84 coordinates in degrees) of some central location in the commune (only used for categories for specific communes: if it's missing, the commune category will be listed in Category:Communes in France, coordinates missing) empty optional

Placement: At the top of the page

Relies on:

  • Template:ISO 3166-2/FR/details for data about the current composition in departments by region, for the effective encoded statuses of (metropolitan or overseas) departments, regions and related collectivities, and for data encoding specific French grammatical rules (usage of French definite articles before translated toponyms).
Note that the composition of newer regions starting in 2016 is not included (and not displayed by this template): some categories by department still need to be categorized in these newer regions after using the current template (in 2016 this will be the reverse, if we want to keep a link from departments to their former regions; this details template for now does not contain data for the newer regions).
  • Template:City for translating toponyms for all locations (communes, departments, regions) and defining a link to the appropriate Wikipedia article in that language.
Note this it is now protected: to provide translations and links for other locations, you need to create templates whose name match the toponym name (see), suffixed if needed for disambiguation (please use the same unambiguous name for such templates as the category created for that location).
