Template:PD-signature

From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository
Jump to: navigation, search
Public domain This signature is believed to be ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain because it falls below the required level of originality for copyright protection both in the United States and in the source country (if different). In this case, the source country (e.g. the country of nationality of the signatory) is believed to be ***Tag invalid. You must provide the source country as a parameter.***.
Note that this tag cannot be used on all signatures, as not all signatures are copyright-free.
See Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag for an explanation of when the tag may be used.

This template will categorize into Category:PD signature.
Warning Care is needed by re-users of signature images. Signatures are still protected by forgery, counterfeiting, and other fraud laws, and may possibly be subject to trademark protection (even if no {{Trademark}} disclaimer has been applied). Lack of copyright protection is no defence if non-copyright laws are broken and, as always, it is for the re-user to ensure that the proposed re-use is allowed under local law.

Usage

{{PD-signature |1= }}

The template takes one mandatory parameter, which is the name of the source country (the country of first publication, if known, or as a fallback the individual's country of nationality) so that a judgement can be made as the minimum level of originality required under local law. If the parameter is omitted, or if the signature is arguably complex/creative enough to attract copyright, then the image cannot be assumed free and must be deleted under the precautionary principle.
