This template should be changed so that it checks if /en exists and if not fall back to the main template. Multichill (talk) 01:02, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Much shorter name.
  • Includes every language that has at least one template (including POTD descriptions). I'll be adding a few more that have a chance of showing up in the future, but for now it should find everything. A few deprecated language codes have been intentionally left out. These will soon be renamed.
  • Adds a noincluded category so you can replace the whole page now.
  • There's a new system message that informs users they can update using this method. It only shows up when editing existing pages that end in "/lang" and are in the template namespace. This message is found here. Rocket000 (talk) 02:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Link order[edit]

As raised here, there was an argument for having links ordered after ISO codes, so it's easier to maintain language lists. However as this template here along with {{lang links}} requires no ordering for maintenance, it'd be quite helpful to let these add links ordered alphabetically after language names. For instance makes it way easier to find Suomi starting letter "S" unless you previously know it might be somewhere at the other end of list near Français starting with letter "F" as it's code is fi. 08:55, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

No, I think languages should be ordered by code. Multichill (talk) 09:27, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
It's reasonable indeed to do so when using {{LangSwitch}} or in these tabels, where language names don't appear. But here, besides it being helpful to order by names, I don't see a reason why they should be ordered by codes. 10:14, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
To be honest, the main reason why I didn't was because of the work involved. I have no idea how order these by native name. Alphabetizing a bunch of different alphabets together never made sense to be. In fact, I don't think anyone really knows because every list I see is different. But, I agree it looks better and people can probably find their language easier. Many people don't know ISO codes and it doesn't help that some are based on English names. I did finally do this for {{VN}}. When I use that template, I always order it by code and the template displays it by name. So it's alphabetized no matter what you're looking at—the template or the code. Rocket000 (talk) 10:32, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Because it's easier and it's clear how it should be sorted when you just do it by ISO code. Take a look at the number of interwiki sorting orders we have to understand how difficult it is. Multichill (talk) 10:36, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
What question are you answering? I didn't ask anything. lol. I know doing it by code is by far the easiest. That's why I did it that way. :) Rocket000 (talk) 10:47, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
And yet, it's done on most pages on most Wikipedias. On Wikipedia I usually use this tool, when they are totally messed up. There is a proposed order. Only that I see some languages missing from there – should find the pronunciation for these and implement these into the order where they would make sense the most. Good thing here is that ordering shold be done only once, right? 11:22, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Right. But that proposed order changes a lot (and by anyone). If there really was one correct way I don't think it would be like that. The other issue is that we have many not in that list (and will have more). What list will we use for those? Anyway, I would like to see what others have to say before wasting time on trying to sort them. Rocket000 (talk) 12:18, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I'm working on a list. Not necessarily for this template but I know it will come in handy with other templates (like I needed for the new {{VN}} on Wikispecies). So now it comes down to personal preference. Right now it's 1 vs. 1; I don't care either way. Let's hear from others. Rocket000 (talk) 22:04, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I've sometimes moved "Sumoi" (fi) to letter 's' in /lang-templates, so that for readers it wouldn't seem like there is no Finnish translation (letter 'f' is quite far from 's', so one might not notice it there), but this template always messes it up. 15:56, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Can it be renamed to some other name to create a redirect from this to Template:Localized link as it done in other wikis that use Extension:Translate ? Since this one is using with subst it has not much transcludions so they can be fixed easily. --BaseSat (talk) 17:01, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
