Note that botanists differenciates what are called "thorns", "spines" and "prickles". Thorns are derived from shoots, spines are derived from leaves, and prickles are derived from the epidermis and don't have vascular bundles inside. References: for example Judd et al. Plant Systematics or Simpson Plant Systematics. (In spanish they are called "espina caulinar", "espina foliar", and "aguijón" respectively).
