When transcluded, a Commons .tab page is automatically turned into a wikitable. Alas, this doesn't work outside of Commons.

Graphs derived from the same .tab pages have been included for some examples to demonstrate how tables and graphs can work together.

Apache OpenOffice mailing list messages[edit]

Data: The annual average of the number of messages posted to the Apache OpenOffice project's English language mailing lists each month.[1]

Comments: The graph uses the year as the x axis and the number of messages as the y axis. Unfortunately, the table doesn't understand axes - it reflects the structure of the .tab page and treats all columns as equals. A human-written table would use ! to define the years as row headers.

Table issues:

  • No ability to set row headers

Percentage of the population overweight[edit]

Data: The percentage of the population either overweight or obese by country and year.[2]

Comments: The inability to customise the table is really apparent here. Quite simply, it's a mess. There is far too much data for this table to be any use. But there is substantial potential to create useful tables by allowing the selection of only a subset of the data. For instance, a table of a single country's data could be created. For display reasons, the "ISO Country Code" field may need to be augmented by a field listing the common country names (e.g. China, France, Zimbabwe) - although these names are used by the corresponding graph.

The graph features a nice level of interactivity and demonstrates the potential when tabular data is combined with map data (the map comes from a .map page) and the graph extension. Once interactive mode has been enabled by pressing the play button, hover over each country to see some data for that country; click along the timeline to select a year; and drag the left or right dotted lines at the edge of the slider to show the percentage change during a particular time period. The graph also allows the year used for the initial display to be specified, considerably extending its potential.

Table issues:

  • Data is useless as a table without the ability to select which data to display
  • Wide columns caused by lack of text wrapping
Seriously, this table never ends!

Gross domestic product of US states[edit]

Data: The gross domestic product of US states by year.[3]

Comments: The table suffers the same problem with the years not being row headers as the OpenOffice example. It is also extremely wide, going far beyond the width of the page. Flipping the states from columns into rows would help - up to a point. Being able to limit the data displayed would provide a solution that could be maintained even as the data set is updated. Combining these two approaches could lead to the years (rows) and states (columns) being flipped around and the table covering only the last five years of data. Note how the names consisting of multiple words are wrapped - this occurs because the table takes up the full width of the page's content area (and then some). This autowrapping should be extended to cover situations where one cell is substantially wider than the rest of the column (often caused by the headers for columns consisting of numbers).

Three quite different graphs have been created from this data, two of which use only a subset of the data - that which relates to California, New York and Texas. Additionally, the pie chart uses only the data from 2015. And note that its percentages are calculated automatically. This is the sort of flexibility we need when creating wikitables.

Table issues:

  • No ability to set row headers
  • Numbers are unformatted and hard to read
  • No way to flip axes to improve display
  • It would be nice to be able to highlight a row and/or column
  • It would be nice to be able to add wikilinks

League table[edit]

Data: A fictional sports league table.

Comments: Several issues are apparent here; some of the columns would benefit from being made unsortable and the display of the true/false values used in the qualification column is poor - the table used on the .tab page uses checkboxes, which is much better. It would also be nice to highlight a row; this would be useful for "Team in season" articles. Module:Sports table can bold rows when used this way.

Table issues:

  • No way to set a column as unsortable
  • Wide column caused by lack of text wrapping
  • Display of true/false values is terrible
  • It would be nice to be able to highlight a row
  • It would be nice to be able to add wikilinks
