Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, TonyBallioni!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Change of scope on Cannery Row at Night VI nomination[edit]

I have changed the scope to narrow it down to "Cannery Row". If you have a moment would be willing to weigh in on this change and whether this meets criteria? Thanks--Amadscientist (talk) 19:08, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Scope changed once more[edit]

I changed the scope at the suggestion of another editor to distinguish the street from the novel and the movie. The new scope is now Cannery Row, Monterey.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:02, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Featured picture closures[edit]

Yes, I know. Help is needed to move the closed nomination until the vote is working. Yann (talk) 21:27, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

terms of use violations[edit]

the sts-128 rollout photo was given to nasa as a handout for editorial use only. please read terms of use at original location next time. by posting the image as copyright free-public domain you nearly cost the photog his job.

Hi unknown, are you refering to File:Rollout of STS-128.jpg? --Túrelio (talk) 06:52, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

The original location was not known, NASA copyright policy clearly states that unless otherwise noted, all materialon its website is in the public domain, no copyright is noted, only the photographer as the source. I was going on the best information available o me at the time and working off experience with another file that was deleted (and later restored as pd-author) under similar circumstances. NASA's website still does not note any copyright restrictions (and they are fairly good about doing this) and as such I feel that PD-author is still valid. TonyBallioni (talk) 09:55, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Ah, at last I have found what little discussion has been going on about this issue. Since my derivative work of Rollout_of_STS-128.jpg, File:Rollout of STS-128 filtered.jpg, has been speedied as well, I would really love to know what rationale the nominators have for assuming that with these images, NASA copyright policy somehow shouldn't apply (according to this policy they are clearly not copyrighted since there is no relevant notice on the source page, [1]). I would also like the coward who anonymously made the incredible accusation that started this thread here ("you nearly cost the photog his job") to come forward and announce himself. Such behavior is orders of magnitudes worse than any (alleged!) copyright violation. -- JovanCormac 06:04, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
