Early Christian area
[edit]The photos are from 1996. In the meantime, I have encountered a number of problems in the literature. The first concerns the identification and interpretation of the remains of buildings and mosaics.
I have come across three different interpretations:
1. Roman baths from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The mosaic are said to depict Helios.
2. A synagogue from the late Roman period.
3. A Christian baptistery, probably from the 5th century. This was the only interpretation I knew before.
The second problem concerns the location. I vouch for the one I have given here, namely the tavern now called Schoinos. I don't understand how this relates to the description of the Roman baths ("Tallaras") elsewhere in Analypsis. There must be a mistake somewhere. Perhaps in my interpretation, I don't know, but also somewhere else in the generally accepted location.

Mosaic in Maltezana at Analipsi, Astypalea, 5th century ADː Christ Pantokrator is portrayed as Helios middle of the zodiac, surrounded by waves of Oceanus and the Four Seasons, around are the heads of men (the Apostles?), waterfowl and ornaments.
