Questionable recat[edit]

I have my doubts about this recat that you did: if someone is starting from coins and trying to find this category, it seems to me that they would never think to head down this path. Please have a look and reconsider.

If you want to communicate on this, please "ping" my user talk page; I won't be watchlisting yours, so I won't be aware if you reply here without letting me know. - Jmabel | talk 04:28, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Your rect proposal[edit]

Re.: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Categories_for_discussion#Category:Ancient_Greek_coins I gave my opinion. My suggestion is that you start to sort out the various kinds of coins by geographic area by creating the appropriate (and today missing) categories, rather than enlarging the existing one. We do need a recategorisation work: the current catgory is becoming too crowded!Thank you for your kind attention. --User:G.dallorto 20:43, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Vietnam postcards[edit]

How do you know that File:Bao Dai.jpg, File:Đề Thám.jpg, File:Hanoi residence.JPG, File:Pho Hang Quat.JPG, and File:Hanoi.JPG were made by the people you wrote down? There is no mention in the files themselves and no outside evidence added. Please add evidence to the files, otherwise deletion should be discussed. Regards Hekerui (talk) 20:37, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi, what I do is basically to search for the postcards on this site, thereby identifying the author. I'm not sure how these data can be added as evidence in the individual entries (same is true for many other files on Commons). If you know a way of adding the data in a way that would qualify as 'evidence', by all means, go ahead and do so. Cheers, Alfons Åberg (talk) 13:34, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
On the cards I mentioned there is no name - on the websites some cards have names, that's true, so for cards hosted here linking to the site (provided a links doesn't disappear, but this is a trade site, unfortunately) or uploading a version with a name would solve the problem. Can you identify the cards? Is, say, File:Đề Thám.jpg in a set? Hekerui (talk) 14:33, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
I'll explain how I see the situation. We (or I) already know who the authors behind the postcards are. The names of the authors are indicated in the description of each file. Provided that the works of an author is in the public domain, there is no copyright problem. In this situation, I think anyone who wants to challenge the public domain status of those images will have to contest the already provided identification of the author. In other words, the burden of proof is on you. I have never before heard of anyone who wants evidence for the author's identity included in the file description itself. If we should follow that rule, we would face two problems. First of all, I assume that 95%+ of all files on Commons would fall short of such a rule, i.e. the file description does not provide evidence of the author's identity. Secondly, evidence as a concept necessarily rests on some level of trust - that is, evidence can never be so unambiguous as to render trust in information provided by Commons users superfluous. Ultimately, I think you are creating artificial rules in this field. Cheers, Alfons Åberg (talk) 19:38, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
You are dliberately misunderstanding. You added Pierre Dieulefils to File:Hanoi residence.JPG as the author but how do you know? Do you have a physical copy on which it is indicated (note in description, please)? Is it noted on a website (direct link please?), do you know another way (explanation?). As of right now you could only look at the type of the card like I did and take that as an indication of the author, but that is questionable and ambiguous. Permission needs evidence, not a hunch. Hekerui (talk) 19:57, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
As for File:Hanoi residence.JPG, I can offer this postcard as evidence of the author's identity. As you will see in the image I am linking to, the card has the "marque au brûle parfum" (the perfume bottle logo), which is Dieulefils' logo (you'll see the logo on other Dieulefils products, see Category:Pierre Dieulefils). What I was trying to say earlier was that when indicating the author of an item on Commons, you simply indicate the name of the author, you don't usually add explanations such as "I know this really is the author because..." - neither in the file description, nor anywhere else. Therefore, I ask you not to expect me to provide explanations in each single instance. I am happy to provide the above as an example of my method of attribution, though. I may misunderstand what you are saying, but I don't do so deliberately. Cheers, Alfons Åberg (talk) 09:00, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I know the bottle and it's fine, but it didn't appear on the version hosted here, so a link is needed to establish authorship. Hekerui (talk) 09:43, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Just for the sake of clarity - do you ask me to provide such links in each single instance? And if so, which rule on Commons is this request based on? Cheers, Alfons Åberg (talk) 10:59, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
All the images need evidence. Commons:Project scope#Evidence: "It is for the uploader to supply suitable evidence, where required, to demonstrate either that the file is in the public domain or that the copyright owner has released it under a suitable licence." and "In all cases, the burden of proof lies on the uploader or other person arguing for the file to be retained to demonstrate that so far as can reasonably be ascertained the file is properly licensed (or is in the public domain)." and WP:Image use policy: "Always specify on the description page where the image came from (the source) and information on how this could be verified. Examples include scanning a paper copy, or a URL, or a name/alias and method of contact for the photographer." Hekerui (talk) 12:32, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
I'd like to point out, that a more complete version of the first quote would be: "It is for the uploader to supply suitable evidence, where required, to demonstrate either that the file is in the public domain or that the copyright owner has released it under a suitable licence. Typically that requires at least that the source of the file be specified, along with the original source where the file constitutes a derivative work." (emphasis added). Based on this, I would argue that the relevant information in each case has already been supplied, and that hosting these files on Commons does not constitute any problem (in terms of copyright or anything else). Note that the capability of raising critical questions is not itself an indication that there is a problem of attribution or licencing. You are free to list the relevant files as deletion requests, but please don't suggest speedy deletion as these are certainly not obvious candidates for deletion. Category:Coins of the Roman emperors[edit]

I created first that category in order to reduce the number of coins that were in "Category:Ancient Roman coins". Then I saw that there were to many coins in this new one. And I began to separate in single categories for every single emperor.

If you think to change the name of this, probably "Category:Roman coins by emperor" sounds better.

BTW: what do you think about some thing as a WikiProjects Numismatics?

Declined move request[edit]

Hi, I did not execute your move request

Rename Category:Ancient Roman coins by country to Category:Ancient Roman coins by localisation (0 entries moved, 17 to go) Rename to clarify/disambiguate category structure and content.

for the following reasons:

  • All subcategories in it point to countries, so I see no reason to diverge from standard commons organisation structures
  • I don't think that "by localisation" is the correct term (unless all coins are localised to the place where they are found); on Commons we use "by location". --Foroa (talk) 07:59, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
== Re: Declined move request ==
Hi, thank you for replying to my move request (Roman coins). I think I need to explain my point more precisely. In coin related categories, we have a recurring problem of making a destinction between categories based on coins' countries of origin and categories based on the current location of the coins, i.e. in which country or museum the coins are at display or otherwise located. It has been a problem to make this distinction clear so far - people are uploading things to the wrong categories, and I have to sort it out afterwards. This is the reason why I request a clarification of the name of Category:Ancient Roman coins by country (which is a 'localisation' category, like Category:Coins by localisation, not a 'country of origin' category). Here's the request again:
Rename Category:Ancient Roman coins by country to Category:Ancient Roman coins by localisation (0 entries moved, 17 to go) Rename to clarify/disambiguate category structure and content.

If you think I should move my request somewhere else, instead of your talk page, please let me know where to move it. Thank you, Alfons Åberg (talk) 14:37, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I'll reply later, but in the mean time:
  • COM:DL is for uncontested moves, which does not apply for your request I guess
  • By localisation is not correct in my opinion, it should be by location (localisation is for example the French version of an Ancient Roman coin)
  • With category:Ancient Roman coins in Italy, do you mean the coins found in Italy or the ones displayed in Italy ?

re:Token? Corsica?[edit]

In "Monnaies Françaises" (ed. 1995, sorry) there are three (3) coins minted by Théodor de Neuhof: two (2 1/2 soldi & 5 soldi) have the initials of "king" and the value in Italian on reverse. The 1/2 scudo have the head of Théodore on obverse and Virgo Maria on rev.

So, in my opinion the description (and name too) are meaningless.

BTW, "Kings" don't mint "jeton" (token)

Text says: LEO DVX ... ET PRIN.

not: REX

Coats of arms are:

three Post and hunting horns in heraldry,
Category:3 lions rampant in heraldry
barry of eight, gules and argent (for Hungary (see: File:Leopold I Arms-personal.svg
gules a fess argent (for Austria), /see the same
I can't recognize the central one, the most important, because has the crown. (sorry).

I'll ask to a guy really interested in heraldics.

Probably reverse of some Habsburg coin (with less interesting titles).

Elblag museum[edit]

Thanks a lot for expansion! I have no skills in numismatics, so I was unable to describe it in a better way than already written on the texts below the coins, or I failed to found any information so it wasn't described at all. The documentation of the exhibition was a part of the Wikiexpedition 2010, during which we documented practically everything possible in the vicinity. That means also a lot of object that I'd never consider as my field of interest. --Aktron (talk) 12:36, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
