Hello, AzaToth/Archives/2011!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File tagging File:Dr Riji nair.JPG

Hello AzaToth, the image is taken by myself and needs no extra permission. Regards--Fotokannan (talk) 17:03, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

It applies to you as well, as the declared author is not certain you. AzaToth 17:05, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
One doubt here is that, Where does the author gives the permission for this work? I think it is his own work and published under CC-SA.--Rameshng (talk) 17:20, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Deletion requests

I am rather concerned about your nominating images for deletion on the basis of "yet another penis". That is really not a reason for deletion. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:43, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Was a misunderstanding from my part, I thought all images of genitalia by newly created accounts should be listed for discussion. AzaToth 21:35, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

File:2011 Battle of Sirte

Hello!

I really don`t understand what is wrong with that file. I`ve made that map. My sources are shown in the description page. Whats wrong? --Ave César Filito (talk) 15:42, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

There are no problem with the file in it self, only that it can't be copyrighted as the "file is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain, because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship" (see Template:PD-ineligible). AzaToth 15:44, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Now I understand. But, how can I change that? --Ave César Filito (talk) 15:49, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

2011 Libyan Civil War

Hello, I got something about licenses, but I don't understant what I did wrong. I just updated the map and I kept the same license as before!--Vectrex

The map is in my opinion below the threshold of originality (no disrespect), and should be marked with pd-ineligible or similar. AzaToth 16:06, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Sara Paxton

Hey ! In Picasa there wrote that the license of this photo is free (Creative Commons). See here, in the right. If it false, it is not me who is at fault but the person who posted this photo on picasa. Cordially, Cl;nintendods (talk) 18:34, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

No problem, it can be difficult to see if an image has been license washed or not. It could be that the actual image is available under an cc-by license, and also licensed via getty images; It's difficult to know without contacting the author of the image. AzaToth 18:36, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. The photo will be removed or not ? Cordially, Cl;nintendods (talk) 19:48, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

File:To many sleepless nights.jpg‎

In particular File:To many sleepless nights.jpg‎ should be renamed, but I do not know the scientific name. You quote a policy that doesn't prohibit me from filing non-final rename requests, and this one in particular goes under "change meaningless bio-names into binomial scientific names". The template rename gives an usable notice to help with defining a good rename for uncertain request, it's clearly not an "invalid request" AzaToth 11:44, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi AzaToth !
I agree that this file's name should be improved but please understand that we, filemovers, have to follow the guidelines.
First of all, you didn't mention a legitimate reason to rename this file as required by the guidelines. Since you weren't the original uploader, I tried to find for you a suitable reason according to our criteria but I failed, sorry.
Please feel free to try again, this time with an expressed acceptable reason and if possible with a more relevant name. I'm not the only one who processes these requests.
Best, Papatt (talk) 12:16, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Well, I was using the rename feature of the Gadget, and it doesn't allow you to add an reason. :( AzaToth 12:31, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
The best then is to edit your request(s) by adding the specified reason according to the template's syntax and criteria (few matching words may be enough).
I didn't find the link to your Gadget but be sure a report of this lack will be appreciated by both renaming requesters-to-be and filemovers if dealt with.

File:Jerzy Vetulani

Hellow, You nominated my photograph of Jerzy Vetulani for deletion. On my discussion page I have a message which say that the file dosen't have required data about licensing. Well, I am author of that picture and I am the copyright holder.

How am I supposed to prove it? Francesco 13 (talk) 20:19, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Fair use for "Ethnic Udi.jpg"

Though this image is subject to copyright, its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

 1. It is of much lower resolution (and size) than the original (copies made from it will be of very inferior quality).
 2. The photo is only being used for informational purposes.

Sorry, I did not know there was a possible copyright problem. But I hope the Fair Use for informational purposes can maintain the file in wikipedia/wikicommons.

Commons:Licensing

Additionally I have checked the Commons:Licensing for Azerbaijan, and I have found that there it is NO copyright in this country for photos related to works of folklore (according to to the Copyright law of 1996). Since the image to be deleted shows a girl singing with a typical local instrument, I think we are dealing with local Udi "folklore" and should not be erased. Sincerely, --70Tav (talk) 18:20, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Double Checking

Before I try to upload, these images ([1]) are safe right? Since I see the (by-sa) licenses. Jay2kx (talk) 18:58, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

It's difficult to say, as it could be that the author of the blog doesn't have permission to use the images in the first place even, or that it's only the text content of the blog that is under cc-by. AzaToth 19:45, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

I was wondering the same thing. Haha. Thanks. Jay2kx (talk) 20:05, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

That might be, although I don't think so in this case. Feel free to start a regular deletion request (the 'nominate for deletion' link from the menu). Speedy deletion is only possible in clear cases. In case of any doubt a regular DR is more appropriate. Jcb (talk) 21:10, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Why was this marked as lacking permission? I have an email from the uploader in ticket 2011101310020281 asserting permission for the file they uploaded. But that's not any better than what the uploader asserted when they uploaded the file. Do you wish me to disregard it? Who are you looking for to provide the permission? – Adrignola talk 22:32, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

I marked it as lacking permission as I found the image out in the wild, but in lower resolution, for example http://europa-centre.com/30_11/754-institut-sveta.html - perhaps I marked the image with the wrong template. AzaToth 22:35, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

It is not relevant for Commons if you need the files for your work. The only thing that is relevant is if the files are free or not and if they are usable or not. I checked some of the files and if you can forward a permission from the photographer /creator / copyright holder it would help a lot. --MGA73 (talk) 17:29, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Please stop deleting OUR OWN IMAGES

Dear AzaToth,

Several images that we have created and OWN THE COPYRIGHT to are being deleted - if you had investigated further you would have found this message I left on Courcelles' Talk page (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Courcelles), who deleted the original images:

"Hi,

I uploaded several images to a page. We are the creator of the images, but you deleted them a few days ago.

I did try to grant permission, but I admit that I find the Wikipedia permissions process EXTREMELY confusing. I granted permission, yet afterwards it was showing me a red box saying that permission had been granted but there was some other problem I did not understand. I'm sorry but I was very confused. Please let me know what we have to do to give you permission to use the images.

I'm uploading new (different) images to the page and going through the file uploading process very carefully (one by one), and I am selecting the "This is my own work" option at the end. I hope this is enough to grant Wikipedia permission to use the images. If not, please tag the images (don't delete them as we can give you permission! We created and own all rights to the images!) and then let us know (here on your talk page, I will keep an eye on it) the necessary steps to give you permission to have them on your website.

Thank you very much and sorry for any trouble.

Sincerely,

pdbox"

Right after I left that message on their page, I sent an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org granting Wikipedia permission to use the images. THIS IS RIDICULOUS that after doing exactly what Wikipedia wants the images are still deleted! I also can't get in contact with Courcelles since it seems they do not have time to investigate whether the images were wrongly deleted or not? How are we supposed to prove we own the images when we can't get in contact with anyone? This is very frustrating and confusing.

WHAT MORE DO WE NEED TO DO TO SHOW YOU WE HAVE THE PERMISSIONS?!

Please let us know, we followed all the instructions we found on the website, what more do you want!!

I would link you the files, but they have already been deleted and so do not exist! (the original filenames are in the email I sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, seems that didn't help at all!). How can we even ASK for permission and PROVE our ownership if you DELETE the images less than 24 hours after we upload them? I bet no one even read our email we sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org!

Here are the 4 deleted files in case it is helpful after all, and they can be magically restored somehow: [1] [2] [3] [4]

Here are the 3 remaining files on the page that will probably be deleted because no one read our email to you: [5] [6] [7]

Please AzaToth let us know what we need to do, we are new users of Wikipedia and have spent a lot of time trying to learn the website, but we think the image permissions process is very unfriendly to new users. We tried all options we could find and despite our best efforts our work was deleted. We need those images up as soon as possible and when we try to prove our ownership to the user who first deleted the images we get a "sorry I'm busy and don't have time to investigate" message - this is not acceptable! If someone doesn't have time to check to see if they deleted images in error or not they shouldn't delete them in the first place.

Please let us know what to do to prove our ownership and grant you permission and we will do it.

Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by pdbox (talk • contribs)

Could you update the animated Libyan Tripolitania Front map?

I really appreciate the work you put into making an animated map of the Tripolitania Front during the Libyan Civil War back in August. Most of the articles and common maps about the subject matter are relatively static and don't do justice to this mobile and rapidly changing conflict in the way an animation like this can. Now that the war has ended, do you think you can update the map through the war's culmination, and maybe create one for the Gulf of Sidra Front? Thanks. 173.70.82.26 15:31, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Regarding all your panorama requests

Thank you for trying, it is greatly appreciated. But I don't think that removing the requests is going to solve the problem. Maybe some other user will come along in time? Although we maybe should delete all two files by this user for out of scope Facebook style advert and help enwp cleaning up a bit. ;) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:45, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Note: Discussed in IRC. Thank you for your help! :) --Saibo (Δ) 14:38, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Can you explain it?

[7] - Why do you destroy Czech description and category name? --Dezidor (talk) 09:14, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Clearly a technical problem. I just wanted to comment on the pr remove: if the stitching is impossible of these images (yes, they have very tiny overlapping and different lighting), the related images should be kept in the other version field in a different way as the person who watches those three images can put them together in brain. ;) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:42, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, was a character set error in the script I was running. Wont happen again. AzaToth 18:29, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for looking up on my uploads, but please, couldn't you find anything better?`AzaToth 19:31, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
One wonders when the Buddha statue was made and when the sculptor died. I also think that File:Gare de l'Est Paris 2007p1-restitch.jpg would be considered a problem. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 19:45, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
