Can we talk about this?[edit]

Hi there,

You seem to be working your way through all 1,856 photos I've uploaded and flagging anything you can for deletion. This began immediately after I intervened to help a new user whose photo you'd flagged at Commons:Deletion requests/File:"This is your home" artwork at Christchurch mosque shooting memorial, Monday 18 March 2019.jpg. I've already raised a question about your interpretation of Freedom of Panorama to apply to business storefronts; could you address that, please?

If you want to claim that a business's frontage is a "graphic work", not a "work of artistic craftsmanship", you're making a distinction that the copyright holder themselves – the business – would not recognise, because they themselves chose to put their signage on the street, as visible as possible. A court in NZ would laugh at anyone who tried to claim taking a photo of a storefront was violating copyright. So who, exactly, are you protecting from copyright violation by this sort of policing? —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 14:02, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

You've also just flagged all the photos brand-new user EvokeArt has just uploaded for deletion because of the default Exif settings on their camera. I have been trying to organise public uploads of files to c:Category:Christchurch mosque shootings as part of w:Wikipedia:GLAM/New Zealand Wikipedian at Large/Chch mosque shootings, and this sort of action won't help. Please, can we try to explain problems to the newcomers and ask whether they can fix them, rather than threaten to immediately delete their work? —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 14:33, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

And you've claimed that those photos are derivative works because they depict hand-drawn hearts and messages, but you yourself just uploaded c:File:"Peace_&_love"_message_card_for_Christchurch_shooting.jpg, c:File:Flower tributes at Kilbirnie Mosque.jpg, and c:File:Drawing to show support to the shooting victims.jpg, which depict exactly the same thing. Should we flag those for deletion too? Again, who is being protected from copyright violation here? —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 15:03, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@Giantflightlessbirds: Simply a heart logo is in PD per PD-shape. --B dash (talk) 15:30, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
you realize how many museum scans have "all rights reserved" exif? and we had an editor photoshopping them and changing the exif to PD mark? wouldn't those facts suggest that it would be prudent to contact the uploader, not speedy template spam their talk page? you should expect to have yet more people exif washing, shouldn't you? what will you do then, say email me a copy of the OTRS for every upload? File:West Midlands Police.png[edit]

I noticed that you marked this file for speedy deletion as a copyvio. The file originates from West Midlands Police who released it under a cc-by-sa-2.0 license and it bears no copyright markings. Its status was checked and reviewed by the FlickreviewR bot. Please consider withdrawing the speedy template. I realise I am able to remove it and instead nominate it for a deletion discussion, but this appears to be a fairly obvious case of a misunderstanding so I'm suggesting we avoid further unnecessary process. Thanks. Neil S Walker (talk) 08:04, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:LA SOIREE DE C. CASTANER (47364903732).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

File source is not properly indicated: File:Fridays For Future Vicenza.jpg[edit]

Hi B dash, I saw your message about File:Fridays For Future Vicenza.jpg, as I wrote in the file (in Italian) the picture has been given to me by a friend of mine, I didn't want to put "I'm the author" because I thought it would have been correct to insert her name, but the source of the image is just that, she physically gave me the file.

What should I do?

Thank you very much --Pottercomuneo (talk) 12:15, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

@Pottercomuneo: I changed the tag to no permission. You can ask your friend to send the permission via COM:OTRS. --B dash (talk) 13:05, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Wooferendum[edit]

As one of the files in the DR is by you: I contacted the wooferendum website owner after the DR via the contact form on the website, and first got a positive reply, but he never sent a permission to OTRS and I haven't heard of him for some time now. Maybe you can also try to talk to him, otherwise I do not intent to do more about this DR. --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:56, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

@C.Suthorn: I don't know much about this, maybe you have to do more. --B dash (talk) 13:09, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
English is not my native language, and talking about license questions is delicate. I tried my best, but if I try to do more I might do more damage than good. --C.Suthorn (talk) 13:51, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
